Nebraska Women’s Volleyball Set To Pack Football Stadium

One of the most well-attended women’s sporting events in U.S. history will be a Nebraska women’s volleyball match.

In just two days, the team sold about 89,000 tickets to a match at Memorial Coliseum, the school’s football stadium. The August event will crush the previous NCAA record for volleyball attendance, which Nebraska previously held with a little over 18,000 attendees.

The record demonstrates the popularity and profitability of women’s volleyball, which has experienced exponential growth in recent years.

  • At the youth level, girl’s volleyball is the second-most popular sport behind track and field.
  • College volleyball players have demonstrated major name, image, and likeness marketability. One of the era’s earliest stars, Lexi Sun, played for Nebraska volleyball.
  • Women’s sports league Athletes Unlimited launched a successful volleyball tournament in 2020, and multiple other leagues have launched since then.

It’s not just volleyball. The record is the latest example of the skyrocketing appetite for women’s sports.

For example, the NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament set an overall attendance record in March. It also smashed previous viewership records with a championship game that drew 9.9 million viewers.
