WWE Reportedly Has ‘Significant Plans’ For AJ Styles, Omos After Split

This article is more than 2 years old.

WWE has split up one of Raw’s top tag teams in order to ignite two big singles pushes on the road to WrestleMania 38.

According to WrestleVotes, AJ Styles and Omos are officially going their separate ways following what transpired on this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw:

Although Styles and Omos have been paired together on-screen for more than a year, it sure seemed as if WWE rushed into a storyline split for the two. That angle had been developing over the past couple of weeks and was expected to potentially play out on the road to WrestleMania 38, but now, WWE is apparently planning on getting this feud over and done with very quickly.

Exactly how that will play out for Styles and Omos is to-be-determined, but as WrestleVotes notes, there are “significant plans” to push both stars in route to WWE’s flagship pay-per-view.

It’s obvious, of course, that Styles—even though he’s been used poorly in the tag team scene for much of the past year—is still viewed highly in WWE. A response to “record lower viewership” for NXT 2.0, WWE booked Styles on last night’s episode of the black-and-yellow brand in an effort to combat the NFL, which had a rare Tuesday night game following Covid-19 related postponements.

That goes to show you that WWE officials still see Styles as a top singles star, even though he’s been relegated to Raw’s underwhelming tag team division since late 2020. Styles’ transition back to the singles scene—and reported big plans WWE has for him there—should be taken as a sign that he will be featured in a marquee match at WrestleMania 38.

The dream scenario, for many fans at least, is Styles vs. Edge, a match that has never happened before and could be a potential Match of the Year candidate, especially given that Styles is still one of the world’s best in-ring performers while Edge has consistently put on classic matches since returning to the ring after a near decade-long hiatus. That would also explain why Edge is biding his time with a midcard feud with The Miz, as WWE likely wants to keep Edge looking strong in preparation for a possible showdown with Styles.

While it’s difficult to envision Styles not getting a substantial push in early 2022, the future of Omos is less clear.

WrestlingNews.co notes that WWE almost pulled the trigger on a Styles/Omos split during the WWE Draft in October but decided that “Omos was not quite ready” for a singles push. So, has that much changed in a two-month span? Probably not.

But WWE is quite clearly shifting its focus to developing physically large superstars, and given that The Undertaker recently likened Omos to the great Andre the Giant, it’s apparent that the colossal Omos perfectly fits the bill as the type of superstar WWE wants to push both now and for the foreseeable future.

Exactly how fans will react to a massive singles push for Omos is also TBD, but history suggests that the behemoth will be facing an uphill battle.

There is a reason why Omos has spent the past year-plus doing very little work in tag team matches, and that’s because he’s a very raw talent who has shown, at best, a minuscule amount of potential to develop into a Taker-like big man worker. Although WWE is shifting more toward pushing larger-than-life performers who will catch the eyes of the general public, in-ring work still matters, and a sizable push for Omos might not sit well with WWE’s most passionate fans.

Nonetheless, that won’t stop Vince McMahon—who reportedly wants more “monsters” on the main roster—from pushing Omos to the moon, a move that might actually be a necessity given the lack of depth on WWE’s main roster after the company released more than 80 superstars this year.

Thus, fans should expect the Styles/Omos feud to wrap up quickly and in a way that keeps Omos undefeated but also sets up Styles for a major WrestleMania storyline, perhaps as a foe for Edge or maybe even as a challenger for Big E or whoever is holding the WWE Championship.
