Russia's absence boosts U.S. hopes of striking Olympic gold in artistic swimming
(Reuters Sports) EAUBONNE, France April 28 (Reuters) - Boosted by the absence of favourites Russia, the United States will aim for the gold medal in artistic swimming at the Paris Games after qualifying for the Olympic team event for the first time since 2008.
The Americans punched their ticket to the Games following the world championships in Doha in February, at which they won two bronze medals.
"It means so much for me, for the whole team and the rest of USA artistic swimming community as well. For those teams who came before us, for the people who fought but didn't qualify," Anita Alvarez told Reuters on Sunday after taking part in a training session open to the public in the Paris suburb of Eaubonne, where the U.S. delegation will be based during the Games.

Anti-doping watchdog asks Swiss prosecutor to review its handling of Chinese Olympic swimming case
(Associated Press (AP)) GENEVA (AP) — Heavily criticized for its secretive oversight of positive tests by 23 Chinese swimmers before the Tokyo Olympics, the World Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday appointed a veteran Swiss prosecutor to review how it handled the cases.
The Montreal-based doping watchdog said Eric Cottier will be an independent prosecutor “to conduct a thorough review of WADA’s handling of the matter.”

WADA to launch independent review into Chinese doping case
(Reuters Sports) April 25 (Reuters) - The under-fire World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said on Thursday it would launch an independent review over its handling of a case that allowed 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance to avoid punishment.
The investigation will be led by Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier, a former attorney general of the canton of Vaud, who WADA said will have access to all files and documents related to the case and will be free to consult any independent experts.

Paris mayor is confident that water quality will allow Olympic swimming in the River Seine
(Associated Press (AP)) PARIS (AP) — Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo said she was confident water quality in the River Seine will be up to Olympic standards this summer — and that she’ll be able to prove it by swimming there, possibly alongside President Emmanuel Macron.
The Seine is the venue for marathon swimming at the Games and the swimming leg of the Olympic and Paralympic triathlons.
