Built in 1988, the ballpark has no luxury suites, but is considering adding them.
The New York Mets renewed their agreement to hold spring training at Thomas J. White Stadium. The team will make $8.7 million in immediate upgrades and will do a total of $10.9 million in improvements over 16 years.
The county's hotel tax will fund $6.3 million of the work with the rest paid for by the Mets. The team's payment includes $875,000 in rent over the 16-year term, plus $150,000 for naming rights. The venue's name has not yet been sold.
New concession facilities are planned as is a new picnic berm. A new suite level with three suites will be built. It will include terraces for group events. The front of the ballpark will be extended and the exterior improved.
A party deck near third base will offer picnic tables and waitresses serving food from a menu.
The new agreement includes a $1 million penalty if the team leaves within five years. The amount decreases by $100,000 per year after that. If the team leaves any time before the end of the lease, it must repay any outstanding bonds or loans. (Baseball. Facilities, Financial, MinorTeam, Professional Sports, Venue)
