The first collective bargaining agreement was solely between the players and owners in 1970 but has evolved to govern the entire NBA. Since that time, there have been 12 CBAs ratified by the league and the players (Coon, 2022), with the 2017 version that has an early opt-out in 2023, currently in effect.
