The Saints want to build a new ballpark to remain competitive with other league teams that have upgraded their facilities.
St. Paul is asking for $25 million in state funds to help build a new $35 million ballpark for the Saints. The city and team will fund the balance for the 7,500-seat venue.
The most optimistic timeline predicts groundbreaking in 2011 with games being played in the summer of 2013. The team has wanted for some time to move out of its current home at Midway Stadium, where accommodations are subpar for modern minor league teams and where patrons, for the most part, drive in and drive off.
The fate of the city's request is uncertain. Last year, Gov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed every major request of the city after the Legislature had approved them.
The design is the result of a collaboration between Ryan Cos., Julie Snow Architects and Ellerbe Becket, an architectural firm that specializes in baseball Venue design.
The early design calls for a number of environmentally friendly features, from a green roof to water usage that minimizes waste and runoff to the Mississippi River and uses it to water the grass. Snow highlighted a connection – literally through the park on nongame days – for cyclists and pedestrians en route to Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Trail. (Baseball.
