The facility, built in 1988, does not have luxury suites or club seats. Mandalay Sports Entertainment moved the Rockford Cubbies for the 2000 season. Following the 2001 season, the Springfield Capitals were sold to a group of business leaders from across northern Illinois headed by insurance executive David Ciarrachi. The new ownership group decided to relocate the club to Rockford.
The team has begun work planning a new $7.5 million ballpark. The 4,300-seat ballpark will be in Love's Park, Ill., which will help with the financing.
The team will sell bonds for financing and the city will create a special service area of 40 acres around the venue. Businesses that operate within the area will be assessed an additional amount each year on their property taxes with the money to be used for bond repayment. The assessments end when the bonds are retired. (Baseball. Facilities, Financial, IndTeam, Professional Sports, Venue)
