The Austin Ice Bats hope a new arena approved by voters can be their new home. The team has gotten its hopes up before only to see the project derailed, so it plans to take the process cautiously.
In 2006, Cedar Park residents approved a plan to use designated sales tax revenue to finance a facility for entertainment, conventions and sporting events, which could include Bats games. The proposition passed by a 57 percent majority, as voters approved funding the arena with sales tax revenue that has been set aside for economic development projects.
The team already has been contacted by three developers who would like to include the franchise in a proposal to take to Cedar Park officials.
Any development plan would have to be approved by Cedar Park's city council and the economic development corporation's board. The arena project could have a price tag of up to $30 million, Cedar Park officials have said.
In 2005, Cedar Park voters approved a $30.8 million bond issue for a multipurpose events center, but the project was scuttled because of financial concerns.
The Ice Bats continue to play at the arena at the Travis County Expo Center. There are no luxury suites in the facility.
The Venue offers a Belfry Club that costs $125 per person for membership. Only season ticket holders may join. Players visit the club after games to chat up fans.
