The Scorpions moved to Rio Rancho after Albuquerque walked away from its own 10,000-seat arena plan, saying it had become too expensive for them. City officials say they are still interested in a project and a task force is at work trying to come up with an alternative plan.
The arena is intended to be the anchor for the development. The $42.5 million project would include development of 2,000 new parking spaces. The building is expected to host 150 events a year.
The funding plan called for $34.5 million in revenue bonds and $8 million in cash from Sandoval County. The county would raise the cash by selling industrial revenue bonds it owns. The revenue bonds would be supported by a 10 percent ticket tax and a gross receipts tax.
Estimates say the building will generate $7 million a year plus $1.32 million from naming rights and advertising. (Facilities, Financial, Ice Hockey, Professional Sports, Venue)
