Financing
The $21.5 million Kauffman Stadium and the adjacent $21.5 million Arrowhead Stadium were built with money from a $43 million county bond issue. Pct. public: 100
Arrowhead Stadium is the home of the NFL Chiefs and MLS Wizards. Suite leasing is handled by the Jackson County Sports Authority and revenue is divided among the Authority and its tenants. In addition to the suites, there are 33 field boxes that hold 26 to 48 people and lease for $4,200 to $6,500, not including tickets. A private restaurant costs $3,750 to join and $800 in annual dues. Standing room tickets cost $45. The team has set a cap on season ticket sales at 73,000.
The Wizards also lease the field boxes. The 10- to 18-seat boxes lease for $524 while the largest 44- and 48-seat boxes lease for $1,264. The club level suites lease for $642 for the 10- and 18-seat suites with the 44- to 48-seat suites leasing for $1,364.
In April 2006, Jackson County voters approved a sales tax that financed $575 million in renovations for Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadium. In turn, the Chiefs and Royals contributed $100 million toward the renovations, will pay any cost overruns and are locked in through 2031.
The Chiefs also built a $30 million office facility next to its training center at the Truman Sports Complex. The 85,000-square-foot building will be funded by the team, but owned by Jackson County and leased back to the team.
As for the Wizards, the team decided on Kansas City, Kans., as the home for a new stadium and plan to begin construction of the 18,500-seat Venue immediately. The goal is to open the stadium in 2011.
Team officials said there had been concern in the difficult bond market about selling STAR bonds for the stadium's construction, but they are now confident that bonds can be sold.
The state of Kansas offered to make $48.5 million available up-front for the $414 million soccer and office park development.
The state incentive plan calls for acceleration of $48.5 million out of a total of $85 million in state tax credits and cash offered to the project development team. (Facilities, Financial, Professional Sports, Venue)
