Financing
The $517 million ballpark was funded through an increase in the sales tax for restaurant food and drink, rental cars and stadium admissions. The Mariners contributed $126 million to the cost of the ballpark, much of which came from cost overruns on items requested by the team. Pct. public: 76
Seat licenses
Seat licenses are limited at Safeco Field with only 966 charter seats up for sale. These seats, which ring the field, sell for $12,000 to $25,000, plus annual ticket costs. They are sold on a 19.5-year lease with the half year coming because the ballpark opened midway through the 1999 season.
The Mariners moved into their new $517 million ballpark in July of 1999. The Mariners reported a $14.26 million profit from their first full year in Safeco Field. The report was made to the Public Facilities District which helped oversee construction of the ballpark. The team, which had not turned a profit in at least seven seasons before moving into the new venue, posted losses of up to $28 million a year.
The ballpark includes the home plate area Diamond Club with 352 seats selling for $14,580 to $24,219 per full season. Signs are sold as part of a total promotional package and are not priced individually.
In 2007, the Mariners removed eight luxury suites to make room for a new club. The All-Star Club will allow fans to buy a single seat in the facility.
Suite sales declined slightly at Safeco Field the past few years and have plummeted at KeyArena. Safeco Field opened in 1999 with 67 luxury suites and subsequently added another suite on the press box level. For the first few years, 98 to 99 percent of the suites were filled. The 2006 percentage was in the mid- to upper-80s.
The 140 seats in the All-Star Club sell for $100-$125. Tickets are sold in packages of 10, 20, 40 and 81 games. Single-game suites, which include 16 seats, range from $2,400 to $4,000.
The All-Star Club has three rows of assigned seating in an open-air terrace and then an indoor dining area and complimentary buffet. Beer, wine and spirits are sold at a cash bar. Plasma televisions are located throughout the indoor dining area.
Party suites lease for $2,400 to $4,200 per game. (Baseball, Facilities, Financial, MLBVenueReport, Professional Sports)
