In 2006, the Triple-A baseball Toledo Mud Hens formed a new company to own the ECHL Storm. The team, renamed the Walleye, moved into the city’s new arena in 2009.
The design includes a mix of brick, glass, and greenery that will help it blend with Toledo's downtown and become an area for people to congregate and mingle – even without a game or concert.
The cost swelled to $105 million from the initial estimate of $85 million. Commissioner Pete Gerken said the cost increase is due to the increase in the structure's size – from about 235,000 square feet to 275,000 square feet. The additional space allows for extra party rooms and viewing suites, which are expected to increase revenues, he said. (Facilities, Financial, Ice Hockey, Professional Sports)
