The Compuware Sports Arena was built in 1997 and named after the company owned by Peter Karmanous, one of the owners of the Whalers. The owners are considering adding more luxury suites to the venue.
A family pack of four tickets, hot dogs and sodas for the Whalers costs $39.
The Compuware Arena Drive-In offers double features at all three of its screens set up in the parking lot.
“It does pretty well for us,” said Mike Henry, Compuware Arena manager. “It brings in extra revenue during the summer when it normally would be pretty dead.”
In 2002, the arena first rented out its parking lot to Movies at the Drive-In. Three years ago, the arena took over operations and now leases the equipment from Movies at the Drive-In, Henry said.
An arena crew handles the setup, which involves pulling up and down the 60-by-40-foot screens each evening. The drive-in holds 450 cars, usually sells out on Fridays and Saturdays and has a concession stand on site.
Tickets cost $9 per person for those 13 and older, $7 for those 4 to 12 and for students Mondays through Thursdays, and free to children 3 and under.
Instead of speakers attached to the windows, viewers tune their radios to a specific FM frequency.
Corporations can rent out one, two or three of the screens for a private employee or client party and can include ice skating and food/beverage service to round out the evening. Groups receive reduced price tickets for parties of 25 or more and the drive-in also offers vouchers that can be used as a fund-raising campaign that can earn a minimum of $500 for an organization.
Ten drive-ins operate in the state, according to the Michigan Drive-Ins Web site, which provides an extensive collection of information about outdoor movies in Michigan. (Facilities, Financial, Ice Hockey, Professional Sports)
