The Charlotte Knights have signed a deal to stay in their York County ballpark through 2013, suggesting that plans to build a new venue in Charlotte need more time to mature.
The two sides reached basic agreement on a four-year lease renewal that would require the Knights to make renovations to the aging Fort Mill ballpark, county leaders said.
The new lease will have the Knights committing parking revenues up to $150,000 annually towards capital improvements to the facility. York County will also commit its share of parking revenues to the capital improvements as well.
The Class AAA baseball franchise has long sought a new ballpark in uptown Charlotte. But conflicts over a proposed land swap have dimmed those prospects, at least in the immediate future.
The county has already made plans to hire a consultant to study other uses for Knights Stadium, now nearly 20 years old. Baker wants the Knights to pay for the study if the team leaves before the four years are up.
Baker also has asked the Knights to make upgrades to the ballpark, such as improving concession stands and addressing drainage problems that leave puddles in the concourse after rainy weather.
Charlotte ranked last in attendance in the 14-team International League, averaging 4,442 fans per game.
The ballpark has a picnic area that leases for $9 to $11 per person depending upon the menu. Tickets are extra.
Game-day luxury suites lease for $300 or $500, depending upon whether an eight or 18-seat suite is chosen. (Baseball, Facilities, Financial, MinorLeagueVenueReport, Professional Sports)
