Financing
The $232 million venue was funded with money raised for the Olympic Games. That budget included money to renovate the stadium after the Olympics for the Braves. The team guaranteed cost overruns.
Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, which cost $18 million to build in 1964, was replaced in 1997 by Turner Stadium, built as the Olympic Stadium used for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The stadium seated 85,000 for the Olympics; nearly half the seats were taken out, leaving seating for the Braves at just under 50,000 fans.
Turner Stadium was built at a cost of $232 million (that amount includes demolition of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium). The facility has features similar to other new MLB venues, including a promenade like Oriole Park at Camden Yards and a brew pub like the one at Denver's Coors Field. It also has entertainment plazas, shops and restaurants plus a stadium club, the Chop House with seating for 350, and membership fees of $500 a year.
