The Nationals are looking for a new ballpark site in northern Virginia and plan to move out of Woodbridge and Prince William County. The team planned the move in 1999 when the county rejected a team plan for a $150 million baseball complex.
Owner Art Silber says he is willing to pay for a ballpark which could have a new home at the beginning of the 2013 season.
He estimated a the cost to be at $25 million, not counting land and parking accommodations.
Stewart said the target site is on the I-95 corridor, but the facility may encroach upon a nearby stream. Stewart also said that because of the steep slopes on the site, it may be necessary to build a large retaining wall.
The new ballpark’s seating capacity would be 7,000, up from the 6,000-seat Pfitzner Stadium which was built in 1984. A club level with 14 luxury suites would accommodate 500 people. An enlarged kids zone might be included among the venue’s amenities and there is the possibility a whiffle ball may be built beyond center field.
The ballpark would have all individual seats. Pfitzner Stadium has only 500 individual seats. All grandstand seating consists of rows whose seats are metal. (BaseballMinor, Facilities, Financial, Professional Sports)
