Financing
The new $20 million ballpark was built and owned by a consortium of local foundations and business interests. The county gave the land for the 6,200-seat venue and $4.5 million. It got 10 acres in return where it plans to build a new social services building.
Greensboro has a new downtown ballpark. A challenge to the plan raised by preservationists in 2003 was rejected by voters with nearly 59 percent supporting the new venue.
Voters twice before rejected funding plans to renovate the city's 77-year-old ballpark. Preservationists wanted the Single-A Bats to remain in a renovated War Memorial Stadium. The city wanted the new ballpark as part of a downtown redevelopment program. The Single-A team said it needed a new venue for the revenue it would generate.
