The team debuted in a new ballpark in 2003. The 2002 season was played on the road.
Gary paid the RailCats $165,000 per month in penalties during the 2002 season because the new $45 million ballpark did not open on time. The city has already paid a $550,000 penalty for failing to meet the opening deadline. Team officials say they still lost money last season.
Higher travel expenses, lost ticket sales and making good on ballpark subleases were reasons the team gave for their losses during the 2002 season. The team played all of its 90 games on the road. The team will pay $150,000 to lease the ballpark.
The city was caught up in another controversy when it was reported that it turned over $2 million for construction of a restaurant at the ballpark to the team. The restaurant is leased to Bennigan's which will operate the facility on a 15-year lease. The restaurant firm will spend $2 million more on fixtures.
The ballpark has a hot tub priced at $25 per person. (BaseballMinor, Facilities, Financial, Professional Sports)
