Financing
The $27 million stadium was funded by the city. A $6.4 million renovation in 1984 and a $76 million renovation in 1988 was financed with city and county revenue bonds.

The San Diego Chargers abandoned plans to put a stadium on the November 2006 ballot and have been working with San Diego and surrounding communities on ideas for a new stadium.
The latest proposal calls for a stadium to be built downtown, but no solid funding plan is in place, but the Chargers have recommended creating an entertainment district downtown. The issue is further complicated by the city’s efforts to build a new convention center, a venture that will be funded with increased hotel taxes that will come from its own district.
The team's next steps are unclear. The team was clear to leave after the 2008 season by paying the $60 million outstanding debt on the stadium's latest renovation. The amount decreases each year and each year the team must inform the city whether it wants to extend its lease. The team has agreed to play in the stadium in 2012.
