The Grand Rapids/Kent County Convention and Arena Authority agreed to a new lease in 2012 that keeps the Griffins in the building for 10 years and includes three 5-year renewal options.
In exchange for the long-term tenancy, the new lease offers the minor league hockey team some savings over the long run and the opportunity to earn more money from concessions.
The new lease allows one exhibition game or intra-squad game with the Detroit Red Wings, the Griffins’ National Hockey League affiliate. It requires the team to play all exhibition games within 50 miles at the arena and allows for one outdoor game per season.
The new lease calls for the Griffins to pay the arena $9,583 per game if attendance is below 5,000 and $10,266 per game if attendance if above 5,000.
The team will get 15 percent of the first $948,084 in annual concession revenues, 35 percent of the revenue if the annual total is below $1.45 million and 40 percent if total concession revenue is over $1.45 million.
The $75 million arena was built with a combination of private and public monies. The arena opened in October 1996 and hosts the Griffins.
The city takes the parking revenue for the venue while concessions are divided based on attendance. The arena sells the suites and divides the proceeds with itself and the teams. (Facilities, Financial, Ice Hockey, Professional Sports)
