Oakland A's owner Lew Wolff reopened the Earthquakes in 2008 as an expansion team. The team formerly known as the Earthquakes moved to Houston.
The team began its new life at Santa Clara University's Buck Shaw Stadium as its temporary venue for the majority of the home games.
The Earthquakes made upgrades to Buck Shaw Stadium including renovating the full-sized practice field, adding approximately 5,000 temporary seats which increased Buck Shaw Stadium capacity to approximately 12,000 seats. The team also installed a portable state-of-the-art digital video board. The project reconfigured the lights specifically for soccer and expanded the hospitality areas.
Buck Shaw Stadium was named after former Santa Clara football coach, Lawrence T. “Buck” Shaw, and has served as a showcase for Santa Clara sporting events since the facility opened in 1962.
In adding a 14th team, MLS made an exception to its policy that any expansion franchise must have a suitable home stadium. (Facilities, Financial, MLS, Professional Sports, Venue)
