The Coliseum was built in 1952. In 1987 the exposition center was added and after that the War Memorial Arena for baseball.
The Coliseum has undergone renovations in 1989 ($7 million), 1993 and 1996 to upgrade plumbing, facilities and concession areas. The $25 million project will be financed over 10 years by taxes on tickets, food and suite revenue.
All 24 new luxury suites have been sold. The suites seat 16 or 26 fans and lease for $24,000 or $30,000 on three- to 10-year leases. The suites include tickets for the Komets. Many of the leases are to tenants sharing the space. The Fury will lease the suites from the county, then resell them.
The additional seats include 322 club seats costing $300 a year for five years, plus tickets.
The Komets do not have to pay rent for a game if they get at least 5,000 fans in the building. For between 4,000 and 5,000 fans, they pay $500. If there are fewer than 4,000 fans, the Komets pay $1,000.
However, the Komets have a caveat in their lease other Coliseum tenants do not. Because they play so many more games, if their turnstile attendance surpasses 232,500 guests for the season – including the playoffs – the total rent paid for that season will be refunded.
Because the Komets didn’t reach the 5,000-fan plateau 14 times in the 2005-06 season, two times failing to hit the 4,000-fan mark, they paid $8,000 in rent. (Facilities, Financial, Ice Hockey, Minor League, Professional Sports, Venue)
