The team opened its $12 million ballpark in 2010 as part of an agreement with Heartland Community College. The 4,000-seat venue will host a Frontier League team, the CornBelters, and the college’s baseball team.
The naming rights deal was for an initial two years with automatic renewals.
The complex's owners plan to use a screen at the front of the building for drive-in-style movies.
The town will contribute a maximum of $1.5 million for a parking lot. The developers asked that 600 of the 1,200 spaces originally planned be grass parking in order to save money. The city agreed, but will reevaluate the issue after the first season.
The town will get half of the $3 parking charge, which is expected to generate about $100,000 a year.
The contract calls for Heartland to contribute $3.5 million toward the project and lease the property at the West Raab Road campus for $1 for 20 years.
Heartland attorney Rick Grenzebach told trustees that Heartland would have the option to buy the ballpark if one of the other partners defaults. He said the agreement protects the board and the taxpayers of Heartland's district.
The majority of the cost of the project falls to Normal Professional Baseball LLC. According to the contract, the corporation will build, own and operate the ballpark. (Baseball, Facilities, Minor League, Professional Sports, Venue)
