Financing
The $563 million renovation project to fund the stadium upgrade to MLS standards was mostly funded by the province with general tax dollars and money from a proposed new casino.
The stadium was built in 1983, but underwent a nearly complete remodeling for the Whitecaps’ entry into Major League Soccer in 2011 and to host the CFL Lions. The controversial project was delayed many times and the team began its premiere season on the road with plans for a mid-summer home opener. (Facilities, Soccer, MLS, Professional Sports, Venue)
