Financing
The $354 million venue was financed through a 0.25 percent county sales tax increase that will generate $15 million. The rest of the bond financing came from stadium revenue and the Diamondbacks, which invested $85 million.
The expansion Diamondbacks began play in the 1998 season in their new $354 million downtown Phoenix home. The facility is owned by the Maricopa County Stadium District. The team has a 30-year lease agreement which can, at the Diamondbacks' option, be extended for an additional 10 years.
The venue was born as Bank One Ballpark, but its name changed in 2005 after the company was acquired by Chase. The ballpark features a natural grass playing surface and a retractable domed roof, which will open in various positions to ensure a proper amount of sunlight hits the turf without heating the concrete and metal within the ballpark. The Leinenkugels Ballyard Brewery is located just outside the stadium and the venue opened with a TGIFridays restaurant in left field on the suite level. Other ballpark restauranteurs include McDonald's, Blimpies, Little Caesars and Garcia's Mexican Food.
TGIFridays paid no rent to operate in the ballpark, but instead put up cash toward the restaurant's construction. It also paid a percentage of earnings to the ballpark for operating the restaurant there. The restaurant has control of a seating area in the bowl for which it sells the tickets. A five-person table costs $300 per game and includes a food package.
The ballpark features a swimming pool in the outfield that holds 35 persons and leases for $5,900 per game. When the ballpark is full, the air conditioning is on and all systems are at work, reports say it costs $8,700 per hour to operate. (Facilities, Baseball, MLB, Professional Sports, Venue)
