South Bend officials are working on plans for an upgrade to the ballpark that could cost up to $40 million. Initial plans call for funding the project through an existing sports development fund and a tax incremental financing district.
Inside the ballpark, the upgrades would range from the mundane, such as renovating restrooms and updating the 23-year-old facility's heating, cooling and lighting systems, to the dramatic, including new seating and outfield picnic areas, and a park-like centerfield entrance. The work was designed by Populous architects.
That first phase, with an estimated cost of $2 million to $4 million, would include renovating restrooms and adding new ones, replacing the heating and cooling system, installing new field lights that are lower to the ground and more energy-efficient, along with new outdoor suites on the first-base line and renovating the Upper Deck box seat areas.
Work on the new centerfield entrance, which would incorporate a park-like area where the main Gates building once stood, along with the left- and right-field corner upgrades, would start later.
In 1999 the team added a new children's play area that includes a children's concession stand. The area holds about 150 children. (Facilities, Baseball, Minor League, Professional Sports, Venue)
