Allentown spent $177 million to build an 8,500-seat arena for the Philadelphia Flyers-affiliated minor league Phantoms. The complex also includes nearly $100 million more in spending for an eight-story office building attached to the arena and a 180-room hotel attached to the arena.
After settling legal disputes with neighboring governments, Allentown sold $220 million in bonds for an 8,500-seat hockey arena, two parking garages and the bottom portions of an office building and a hotel.
Since the arena was proposed more than three years earlier, cost estimates rose from $80 million to $158 million to what ended at $275 million.
The Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers’ top minor league affiliate, was scheduled to play in the arena beginning in October 2013, but the legal challenges pushed opening day to the start of the 2014 season. (Facilities, Ice Hockey, Minor League, Professional Sports, Venue)
