The Senators are working on plans to build a new arena and prefer relocating to LeBreton Flats.
The hockey club confirmed earlier reports that it will make a preliminary submission to the National Capital Commission to assess its qualification to be part of future LeBreton redevelopment. The club declined to discuss details of its submission.
The National Capital Commission earlier launched a request for proposals to redevelop as much as 21.4 hectares of land at LeBreton Flats that sits south of the parkway and west of Booth Street. One criteria for the redevelopment proposal is the inclusion of "an attraction of a regional, national or international significance" that is also a "world-class capital destination."
The Senators said earlier that moving the team to the site "could only be possible with strong community support."
For decades, many have complained the current arena's Kanata location is inconvenient, if not a downright barrier to attendance.
Built at a cost of CAN$217 million, Canadian Tire Centre is home to the NHL Senators. The building was known as the Corel Centre, but the named was changed in 2006 when Scotiabank took over in a 15-year deal. The company paid a reported CAN$20 million for the rights. Canadian Tire took over in 2013 with an eight-year deal. Terms were not released.
The team handles the signage in one of the more innovative approaches around.
Sandwiched between Montreal and Toronto, it decided to capitalize on its position as Silicon Valley North and dedicate an upper ring only to technology companies. Although it started slowly, missing companies soon got pressure to participate and filled the area. While the venue may not have a lot of high-priced signs, Dan Quinn, manager of corporate properties, says they do more CAN$50,000 deals than anyone else. Those deals include four balloons that hover over the crowd. Food and beverage service at the Palladium is provided by Palladium Catering as well as at the Palladium Club and a bar-type restaurant.
